Benchimol and financial entrepreneurship
The Rio de Janeiro economist Guilherme Benchimol, keynote speaker on the second day of the 42nd International Congress of Intellectual Property of ABPI, starred in one of the most successful stories in Brazilian entrepreneurship. In partnership with Marcel Maisonave, he created XP Investimentos, today one of the largest brokerages in the country. Benchimol currently holds the position of Executive Chairman of the brokerage’s Board of Directors.
In May 2001, with an initial capital of around R$ 15 thousand, XP was born operating in the field of financial education and investment advice. In 2005, the company created the XP Gestão de Recursos and, shortly after, acquired the brokerage Americainvest. In 2008, XP entered the insurance area and invested with large institutional investors.
Between 2011 and 2016, XP acquired the financial information portal Infomoney and brokers Interfloat, Senso, Prime, Clear and Rico. At the end of 2017, Itaú Unibanco (ITUB4) acquired 49.9% of the capital of Grupo XP, in a transaction worth more than R$6 billion. Crowning this journey, in December 2019, XP went public on Nasdaq, the American stock exchange.
